Each day, we have a choice: we can read the news and see despair and division. We could easily choose pessimism and give up on the idea that changing the world for the better is possible. At Action Against Hunger, we refuse to take the easy way: we choose the harder path – the path of hope and of action.
Everywhere we work, we find more reasons for hope. Together with our partners and support from compassionate people across the world, we have made remarkable progress against hunger, leading a global movement that, over the last 20 years, has successfully cut the number of child deaths in half.
As the first and only organization exclusively dedicated to ending malnutrition, Action Against Hunger invented the first formula to effectively treat malnourished children, and we have created successful new models for diagnosing and treating more people, more efficiently than ever before. Whenever we take action against hunger, there are reasons for hope.
We see hope in local solutions and local leadership. The people we support are not just beneficiaries, but partners. More than 95% of our staff come from the communities we serve, allowing us to harness their insights, experiences, and relationships while sharing the knowledge and resources communities need to tackle hunger themselves.
Together, powered by our local staff, we are providing care and solutions in some of the world’s most challenging and hard-to-reach areas: last year, our programs reached more than 20 million people with life-changing assistance.
Hunger is a problem we can solve: it’s predictable, preventable, and treatable. When children complete treatment for malnutrition, 90% are cured – another reason for hope.
In a plentiful and generous world, no child should die from hunger. Not when we know how to treat them. Yet, one in four children will never get enough nutrition. It’s called stunting, and it effects all aspects of a child’s life – health, emotional wellbeing, mental capabilities – well into adulthood. A stunted child is a stunted economy, a stunted world.
It doesn’t have to be this way. We can’t afford it. The world faces huge challenges, and we need every single person to unlock their full potential and contribute to shared solutions. The world needs a better way to deal with hunger.
Hope is critical – but hope is not a strategy. We must harness that hope into action. That’s why each member of our staff, from our research teams to our community health volunteers, work each day to create better ways to deal with hunger. Together, we plan to double, by 2020, the number of children who access lifesaving hunger treatment and to help countless more families realize their goal of never needing hunger treatment at all.
A world free from hunger is possible, within our lifetimes, but we can’t do it alone. We need people everywhere to stand up, speak out, and take action with us today, and every day, until – together – we end hunger. For everyone. For good.
