Northeast Nigeria: Experts and volunteers working together to prevent famine

December 16, 2016

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health declared a nutrition emergency in Borno State in northeast Nigeria on June 27, 2016.  An estimated 3.3 million people in Borno State are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance (according to a Nigeria update published in  August 2016 by the Cadre Harmonise), and 244,000 children are acutely malnourished.

A Euronews TV crew followed Action Against Hunger's frontline humanitarian workers in southwest Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria's Borno State. Action Against Hunger has trained and mobilized community volunteers to go door-to-door to screen children for acute malnutrition and refer them to Action Against Hunger's mobile clinics for lifesaving therapeutic treatment.
