Food Security & Livelihoods

Action Against Hunger’s food security and livelihoods programs tackle the root causes of hunger: problems of access and production.

Encompassing a wide array of activities customized to meet a community’s specific needs, our programs are designed to bolster agricultural production, jumpstart local market activity, support micro-enterprise initiatives, and otherwise enhance a vulnerable community’s access to sustainable sources of food and income.

Agricultural programmes: From initial assessment to programmes implementation

This book focuses on the different aspects and methodologies for implementing food security agricultural programmes. Agricultural rehabilitation programmes can be quite varied considering the diversity of the contexts in which ACF intervenes (open crisis, post-crisis, destructuration, and discrimination). Despite this, the overall goals remain to save lives, relieve human suffering, and preserve and restore food security, by acting on different levels, while helping preserve the dignity of the people, and protection of the population.

Policy paper: Food Security and livelihoods teams (Spanish)

This policy paper provides an overview of Action Against Hunger | ACF International's food security & livelihoods interventions, offers a conceptual framework governing these programs, and highlights the key principles to be followed in undertaking this humanitarian work.

Learning from Experience and Sharing Knowledge: A Capitalization Manual

This manual stems from the observations of our staff members in the field, the constant need to improve the positive impact on beneficiary populations, and the technical development cycle. It is meant to serve as a capitalization guide for ACF missions and ACF technical departments. Its goal is to encourage the dissemination of our results in order to transfer our knowledge and experience to other contexts.

The "Market for the Poor" approach: A new methodology to integrate poor people in market system

The specific objective of this document is to share the advantages, limits and future axes for the development of "Market Approach" within ACF Food Security interventions based on ACF experience in South Caucasus. The widening of the range of interventions to address food insecurity also means the need for a wider analyse, in terms of humanitarian and development issues: structural food & economic insecurity and their link with poverty, community development, institutional policies, etc.

The “Market for the Poor” approach: Annexes

Annexes to The "Market for the Poor" approach: A new methodology to integrate poor people in market system. Includes market and non market roles in different livelihood strategies, selection of tools for market assessments, common and market approaches to problem of the poor, etc.

Food Aid by Grouping Method

The aim of this document is to provide a practical and methodological guideline for the implementation of food aid activities, using the grouping method. It is primarily based on ACF food aid activities in North and South Darfur, during 2004-2007. The document describes the whole project cycle, starting with registration through distribution to monitoring, and provides lessons learnt from ACF field activities.

Disaster risk management for communities

Disaster losses and risk are concentrated in developing countries where most of the poorest live. In these countries, marginalised and discriminated groups are particularly vulnerable to disaster and undernutrition.  Without disaster risk management, families can experience self-reinforcing spiral of poverty, undernutrition and further disaster risk. ACF advocates for integrated DRM at community level that expands on the humanitarian mandate to help solve world hunger, poverty and vulnerability to disaster.
