ECHO (European Commission Humanitarian Aid)

The Humanitarian Aid department provides emergency assistance and relief to the victims of natural disasters or armed conflict outside the European Union. The aid is intended to go directly to those in distress, irrespective of race, religion or political convictions.

Action Against Hunger Ramps Up Emergency Response for Thousands Fleeing Unrest in Ivory Coast

UPDATE: April 25, 2011—Action Against Hunger is distributing 35 tons of emergency food assistance to help the estimated 70,000 people in Abidjan—Ivory Coast's largest city—made vulnerable by food shortages and spikes in the cost of basic foodstuffs. Despite early signs of economic renewal, food scarcity and public health risks continue to threaten thousands of residents' lives.

Commission details action in cholera-hit Haiti

"The European Commission has defended its humanitarian action in Haiti, where an outbreak of cholera has killed at least 250 people following an earthquake in January that devastated the country's capital Port-au-Prince. Asked by EurActiv to comment, Ferran Tarradellas, spokesperson for EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, defended the Commission's action. The EU is working with partners on the ground, in particular the Spanish Red Cross, the French Red Cross, Action Contre la Faim and others, he said."

One in Four Children's Lives at Risk from Malnutrition in Western Chad

N’DJAMENA, CHAD—One out of every four children under five suffers from acute malnutrition in the Sahel region of Western Chad, according to nutrition surveys carried out by global humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger | ACF International, in collaboration with the Chadian Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and the World Food Programme (WFP). Action Against Hunger has scaled up its programs to treat thousands of malnourished children with the condition and urges long-term preventative measures to strengthen local health systems.
