Dining Calendar: So Very French

"Several food festivals created by groups from France are planned for late September. For the fourth year, Le Fooding, a group that takes an irreverent approach to French food and chefs, will come to New York for a series of events, from Sept. 19 to 23. The group has discovered Brooklyn and is calling this year’s program Brooklyn Fling...On Sept. 23 from 7 to 10 p.m. the Brooklyn Flea in Williamsburg will see five teams of chefs and food vendors prepare dishes, with Pierre Hermé making desserts. The cost is $60, $100 for V.I.P. access.

Le Fooding Storms Brooklyn

"For the fourth year running, Le Fooding, a French group that takes an irreverent approach to French food and chefs, will come to New York, for a series of events they have scheduled from Sept. 19 to 23. They’ve finally discovered Brooklyn, and are calling the program Brooklyn Fling...Twenty percent of the ticket price supports Action Against Hunger. Dining Calendar: Celebrate Bastille Day

"The annual Bastille Day party sponsored by the French Institute Alliance Française, on 60th Street from Fifth to Lexington Avenues, will be on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free, and there will be food and wine to sample and purchase. Another Bastille Day block party will be held on Smith Street from Bergen to Pacific Streets in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A French Restaurant Week, designed to coincide with Bastille Day, will run through Sunday, with 53 restaurants offering special menus for $17.89.

How Do You Count the World's Hungry People?

"Nyauma Nyasani, East Africa nutrition adviser for Action Against Hunger, says frequent, on-the-ground checks are far more effective at anticipating hunger problems than annual nutrition surveys.

For the past year, the aid group has been piloting a food security surveillance system in Kenya's arid northeast, based on household questionnaires conducted every three months. And in Uganda, after a similar two-year project, it is developing national guidelines to monitor food security with the health ministry.
