LIBYA: Aid workers call for access to the vulnerable

"Mechanisms must be established quickly to ensure humanitarian access to millions of Libyans trapped behind battle lines, relief officials say. Save the Children, Merlin, Islamic Relief, Action Against Hunger and Christian Aid estimate that four million people, including at least a million children, are in areas that are inaccessible."

CLIMATE CHANGE: Making a case for nutrition

"'The nutrition sector remains largely disconnected from key climate change initiatives, and nutrition only plays a subordinate role in the agriculture and food security discussions on climate change,' said Philippe Crahay of the international NGO, Action contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger), who contributed to writing the UNSCN brief."

MALI: Pockets of extreme vulnerability persist

"Rains started slowly in June but became more intense in mid-July and August in much of the north, according to Action Against Hunger (ACF), and have continued into September."

SAHEL: After 30 years, nutrition strategy revamp at hand

"In Chad Action Against Hunger head Jean-François Carémel said interventions must encompass all these factors. 'The frustration is that the response is focused on curative actions. Acute malnutrition is indeed a medical pathology but it is also social, economic and cultural.'

'“The statistics justify urgent action but also the need for real in-depth, coordinated work on access to and quality of health care. Many approaches exist for preventing malnutrition, including improving food production and livestock breeding and boosting women’s status,' he said."

CHAD: Malnutrition outstrips response

"In parts of Chad acute malnutrition levels far exceed the international emergency threshold, according to a new study – fallout, partly, from crop failure hitting already fragile communities where access to basic health services is low and aid agencies are scarce.

HOW TO: Prevent the Sahel's next food crisis

"'We need to bridge humanitarian and development interventions, and integrate all sectors. Crises are increasingly frequent and complex and go beyond the national and regional level; they need to be dealt with accordingly,'" said Patricia Hoorelbeke, the West Africa representative of Action Against Hunger/ACF International. The standard responses, or those crafted for past crises, are not a solution, she commented.

GLOBAL: Highly nutritious green cakes could save lives

"Almost one in five children measured by height, weight and arm circumference in November 2009 by Action Against Hunger, an NGO working in the region, were acutely malnourished."

In Brief: Mixed blessing of first rain

"Sudden temperature change, the physiological demands on the digestive system of changing from a fodder to a grass diet, and water-borne diseases are always taxing for the cattle. 'Since the animals are already extremely weak, many are expected to die with the first rains,' said NGO Action Against Hunger’s (ACF) West Africa regional representative Patricia Hoorelbeke.

BANGLADESH-MYANMAR: Rush to deliver aid to thousands after landslides

"Local authorities, the UN Refugee Agency, Médecins Sans Frontières - Holland and Action Against Hunger have supported the relocation of affected people using boats. Many other organizations such as Malteser International, Myanmar Red Cross Society and others are also supporting relief efforts, Hubin said."

MALI: Oxfam raises alert on funding shortfall

"Aid groups in the north include the World Food Programme (WFP), which works through the local authorities, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the International Committee of the Red Cross, Oxfam, Action Contre La Faim and Save the Children, which mainly work through local NGOs such as the Malian Red Cross."
