NGO-NGO learning: what works?

"A whole industry has emerged to foster humanitarian learning and, in the main, actors are increasingly collaborative and open when it comes to learning lessons from emergencies. But challenges persist, including a prevailing aversity to risk as the industry corporatizes, and a disconnect between individual and institutional, formal and non-formal, learning...Some agencies or individuals are daring to be more open about mistakes.

Linking early warning to early action in the Sahel

"Aid group Action Against Hunger (ACF) says it has had success in using satellites to monitor pasture and to map biomass production and vegetation levels as well as the scope of drought in order to predict which areas might need the most assistance. 'We've used this [method] in the last two crises, in 2010 and 2012, and it's proved to be a good indicator of food production across the region,' said Alvaro Pascual, ACF's Sahel desk officer."

'The government recognizes there is a problem but it doesn’t necessarily know how to fix it,' she told IRIN."

HKI trains farmers, mostly female, on agricultural methods that help boost their yield and income while saving water and soil resources. It also provides improved seeds and animal breeds.

Guinea – Evading the Cholera Epidemic

With just two cholera cases reported in 2011, Guinea escaped a West and Central Africa-wide cholera epidemic that infected 85,000 people and killed 2,500 in the first ten months of 2011. Luck, as well as targeted prevention efforts on the part of aid agencies and the government, brought this about, specialists told IRIN, but a far deeper overhaul of the water and sanitation system in needed country-wide to diminish the likelihood of such disease outbreaks in the long term.

Climate Change: More than just a word game

Including such words in the text of the proposed climate change deal can translate into money for programmes related to them, says Jazmin Burgess, a climate change policy and research officer with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Women and children are the most vulnerable segment of any society - children even more so - she maintains.

COTE D'IVOIRE: Running out of food and water in Abidjan

"'No one can move in Abidjan right now, given the insecurity,' said Action Contre la Faim head of mission Yann Dutertre. "We are preparing to intervene with food aid and water and sanitation measures as soon as conditions allow.'"

LIBYA: Aid workers call for access to the vulnerable

"Mechanisms must be established quickly to ensure humanitarian access to millions of Libyans trapped behind battle lines, relief officials say. Save the Children, Merlin, Islamic Relief, Action Against Hunger and Christian Aid estimate that four million people, including at least a million children, are in areas that are inaccessible."
