Photo: The G20 Summit must look beyond the west and think of the rest

As western economies continue to flounder, the G20 meeting in Cannes next month has taken on epic importance in the minds of economists. Something has to happen there, western politicians insist, that will save the west, and particularly Europe, from its current deadlock.

Tackling life-threatening child malnutrition in Chad

"Chad, in west Africa, has suffered prolonged droughts, poor harvest and most recently, devastating floods. These 'weather shocks' have exacerbated an already chronic food crisis and one in every four children under five suffers from acute malnutrition in the west of the country. Through the West Africa Humanitarian Response Fund, the UK's Department for International Development is funding partners such as Action Against Hunger to help respond to these humanitarian crises."

Obama has little choice on Sudan

"eanwhile, Action Against Hunger is warning that southern Sudan faces a 'massive food deficit' caused by high staple prices and drought. Acute child malnutrition rates have spiked at well above World Health Organisation emergency levels, the charity said, while shortages were expected to worsen next year."

Warning as humanitarian crisis deepens in Darfur

"...The World Food Programme (WFP) is distributing a two-month ration to 1.1 million displaced people who were served by Care, Solidarités, Action Against Hunger and Save the Children, which have all been expelled. But Rachid Jafaar, a WFP official, warned this was 'unsustainable', and the organisation could not guarantee that all the people affected, at 140 sites, would receive food."

Crossing the Line in Sri Lanka

"For the past year, Action Against Hunger has been pressing for a full investigation into the murder of its staff. They were found in their own compound wearing T-shirts that identified them as humanitarian workers. They were lying face-down and it appears that they had been deliberately executed.
