West Bank, Gaza

The West Bank and Gaza are Palestinian Territories that have been under the contested control of Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967. The long-standing political tensions between Israel and Palestine over these disputed regions -- which include East Jerusalem -- may be decades in the making, but the end result is chronic political instability and severe trade restrictions that have had devastating impacts on local livelihoods, economic opportunities, sanitation conditions, and household food consumption, making life even more precarious for an already at-risk population.

Deprived and Endangered: Humanitarian Crisis in the Gaza Strip

"... Of the 750,000 Gazans who depend on food aid from UNRWA, 94,000 are "special hardship cases" including the chronically ill, the disabled, the elderly, and the very young. Of the additional 265,000 Gazans who rely on the World Food Program (WFP) for food, 90,000 are "destitute cases" almost totally dependent on food. International humanitarian groups that provide food aid, like Oxfam, CARE and Action Against Hunger, are unable to help because Israel has barred their personnel from entering Gaza since November 4, 2008... Action Against Hunger Calls For An Immediate Cease Fire in Gaza

Over the last 12 days, Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants—1 million of whom are women and children—have been subjected to constant aerial, sea, and land-based bombardments without any way to escape the violence. The global humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger / Action Contre la Faim (ACF) calls upon all sides to cease hostilities and allow for humanitarian assistance to reach the displaced in Gaza.

Humanitarian Intervention in the West Bank

With international attention recently focused on Gaza, desperation in the West Bank is often overlooked. Shepherding communities living in zone C in Tubas district (under Israeli control) are facing freezing temperatures and an extended period of drought with limited resources. The region received 23% less rainfall this year with significant consequences for the pastures where sheep graze—the main source of income in the region.

Gaza Emergency

Although temporary opening of Karni brought minimal supplies to markets, the population does not have enough money left to pay for food. Prices are increasing rapidly and this, combined with dwindling household incomes and a dire conflict-related economic collapse, means that people are having to survive on less food and of inferior quality.

Gaza: Urgent Need for Water and Food

The destruction of energy infrastructure has reduced the water supply during the hottest months of the year. The closing of Kerni hinders the delivery of humanitarian assistance and leaves markets without rice, sugar, flour and cooking oil.
