ACF to Improve Poor Conditions in Georgian Relief Shelters

With an estimated 20,000 people still displaced in the aftermath of the recent Georgian conflict, the humanitarian aid organization Action Against Hunger | ACF International has initiated an emergency intervention in Tbilisi. In addition to poor hygienic conditions in shelters, food is scarce and expensive. "In Tbilisi, the price of staple foods such as flour and sugar continues to rise," says Vincent Stehli, desk officer for Action Against Hunger in Caucasus.

Emergency Teams Assist Displaced Georgians

The humanitarian agency Action Against Hunger (ACF-USA), which has been present in Georgia since 1995, will provide assistance to displaced people in Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest city, where more than 13,000 have been temporarily accommodated.

Muttur: Commemorating Two Years Since The Tragedy

Two years ago on 4th August 2006, 17 Action Against Hunger humanitarian aid workers were executed on their base in Muttur in Sri Lanka. They were killed in the offices of a humanitarian organization, a place which had, until then, been considered as a safe house. 17 of our colleagues, 17 friends, brothers and sisters. 13 men and 4 women. A father and his daughter, a mother and five fathers. 11 of them had not yet reached the age of 30. 17 human beings who lost their lives because they wanted to help others.

Breaking News: Abducted Action Against Hunger Staff Released in Afghanistan

The international relief and development organization Action Against Hunger / ACF-USA was relieved to learn this morning of the liberation of its two staff members who were kidnapped on July 17th in Afghanistan. Our colleagues are apparently healthy.

Preparations are underway to expedite their return home to France.

Action against Hunger would like to thank the Afghan and French authorities for their involvement and support.

Philippines: ACF Mounts Response in Wake of Typhoon

Over the next two months, Action Against Hunger / ACF-USA will provide drinking water to 15,000 people in several provinces in Mindanao, which is the southernmost island of the country, and distribute food to 7,500 others on the islands, as well as in the centre of the country, at Corcuera and Banton.

Muttur Massacre: ACF Denounces Ineffective Legal Procedures in Sri Lanka

On August 4, 2006, 17 members of Action Against Hunger / ACF-USA were brutally executed while carrying out humanitarian programs in Muttur, Sri Lanka—the most heinous crime ever committed against a non-governmental organization. Following these atrocities, several legal proceedings were initiated in Sri Lanka, but today, after nearly two years of effort, ACF is forced to recognize the failure of these procedures and the blatant lack of will of the Sri Lankan government to establish the truth.

Myanmar: Nutrition Assessment Points to Looming Crisis in Bogalay

While continuing to distribute aid supplies to the survivors of Cyclone Nargis, Action Against Hunger/ ACF-USA teams in Myanmar have also carried out a needs assessment in the Bogalay region, one of the worst hit areas. The survey, which was carried out last week, found that the situation in the Bogalay district is extremely alarming, both in the immediate and medium term.

Myanmar: Emergency Shipments Arrive to Reinforce Action Against Hunger's Response on the Ground

The international humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger/ ACF-USA has reinforced its efforts in Myanmar with additional shipments of relief materials and emergency response personnel. Plane loads en route for Yangon took off carrying crucial supplies—25 tons of protein biscuits, water purification kits, pumps and equipment for the provision of water, etc.—along with six additional experts in water and sanitation, logistics, and food security.

Myanmar: ACF Convoys Deliver Aid to Hard-Hit Bogalay

Five days after Cyclone Nargis slammed into Myanmar’s southern delta the human toll continues to climb while conditions deteriorate dramatically on the ground. The international humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger / Action Contre la Faim (ACF) has responded by sending a convoy from Yangon loaded with emergency equipment and materials for Bogalay after surveys indicated massive needs in the area.

Myanmar Emergency: Reports from the Ground

Cyclone Nargis, which struck southern Myanmar on May 2nd, has had a devastating effect on the country. Estimates suggest that more than 32,000 people have died and hundreds of thousands more have been affected by the catastrophe. According to Action Against Hunger’s teams on the ground, the need for water, food and shelter will be most urgent in the coastal regions. Needs are also immense in Yangon where the population is facing a major surge in the price of basic foodstuffs.
