Voice from Haiti: Resilience in a Battered Nation

I’m witnessing something amazing in the Croix Deprez neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. Despite having lost everything, including loved ones, people here are pulling together for their community and their nation.

I met Serge Felix, a young 30-year-old father, today. Luckily, Serge was at the barber shop when the earthquake hit. His house was completely destroyed, and had he been at home, he may not be alive today. With his head still half shaven from that fateful day, he told me:

McDonald's, Tim Hortons, Whole Foods Aid Haiti

"Shoppers can make donations through the end of this month during checkout. The funds will go directly to several organizations leading relief efforts in Haiti following the massive earthquake that hit the area last week, including Americares, Food for the Poor, American Red Cross, Partners in Health, Doctors Without Borders and Action Against Hunger."

Government trebles earthquake aid to Haiti

"A cargo plane chartered by humanitarian organisation Action Against Hunger with 20 tonnes of aid aboard arrived in Port-au-Prince at noon on Saturday. More sanitation equipment will be flown out from East Midlands Airport tomorrow."

Relief Efforts in Haiti Slowly Take Hold

"Inoge Laviette is with the international aid organization Action Against Hunger. This is the first time he has delivered water to the people who camped across from the presidential palace. 'The people have to walk around and go blocks away to find what water they can. Sometimes when they are desperate; they will drink any water - even dirty water with bacteria - to survive,' Laviette said."

Rebuilding Haiti: Weighed down by disasters

"...Five months later, bulldozers have cleared the mud from the main streets of Gonaïves. Away from them, on countless side streets, pedestrians look down on rooftops on either side. The houses have been dug out by hand, and the dirt piled in mounds on the roadway. Only 20% of the town has been cleaned up, estimates Olivier Le Guillou of Action Contre la Faim, a French charity, which has paid 1,800 residents to help do the job. ..."

As Haiti storm emergency fades, aid groups seek help with deep-rooted hunger crisis

"...This week, women with small children waited alongside an open sewer to enter a canteen run by the French food aid group Action Against Hunger. Only children shorter than 3-foot-7 (110 centimeters) with registration cards could enter, get a check-up and receive a porridge-like mix of corn, soy, salt and sugar. ..."

Haiti launches malnutrition survey

"...By surveying Haiti, province-by-province, the plan is to have a complete 'nutritional picture of the country,' said Olivier Le Guillou, country director for Action Against Hunger, which is conducting the survey in cooperation with the Ministry of Health. ..."
