The State of Hunger in Mauritania

For decades, Mauritania has been battling high rates of chronic malnutrition, limited access to basic sanitation, and natural disasters.

Vulnerable communities face constant drought, which has exhausted pastures and resources. The country is heavily dependent on grazing, and cattle farmers are facing challenging times as they struggle to keep their livestock alive.

How We're Helping in Mauritania

Action Against Hunger responding to help the most vulnerable communities who have been impacted by the devastating drought in Mauritania. To support families who face long periods of limited rainfall, our teams have created early warning mechanisms using satellite technology.

Helping Herders

In the Sahel region of West Africa, livestock accounts for 40% of the agricultural GDP, but climate shocks make decent pasture harder to find. To solve this problem, we created the Pastoral Early Warning System, an innovative system of real-time alerts that help herders find better grazing land.

Our system uses satellite imagery of biomass and water combined with mobile surveys of people on the ground who share market prices, trends in animal diseases, and reports of bushfires. We analyze the data and send alerts to approximately 100,000 herders via radio, text, and community bulletins.
