Fighting Crop Disease in Conflict Area

A contagious disease affecting bananas threatens the livelihoods and food security of many rural communities throughout eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region torn apart by more than a decade of brutal conflict. Called wilt, the bacterial disease turns the leaves of banana trees yellow, rots their fruit and eventually kills the entire tree.

Food plant sits idle as millions of children face starvation

"There are millions of children in Niger, Chad, Guatemala, Haiti, Yemen, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and so many other countries in desperate need of this food. Without proper nutrients, small children suffer physical and mental damage leading to a lifetime of suffering or death. The World Food Programme, Action Against Hunger and other agencies do not have the cash to buy the food that would save these children."

"In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a country struggling with internal conflict, food shortages, and poverty, thousands of lives are threatened by acute malnutrition. When a child is brought to one of the therapeutic Stabilization Centers at regional hospitals, run by the Congolese Ministry of Health with support from the organization Action Against Hunger, they receive rations of specially formulated Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF).
