CHAD: The Libya Fallout

"Remittances, which half of the households in Chad's western and southwestern regions of Kanem and Bahr el Ghazal used to receive, are down by 57 percent, according to a survey by NGOs Oxfam and Action Against Hunger (ACF). Households on average were sent US$220 per month."

Q+A-Rainy Season Worsens Chad Cholera

"A cholera outbreak in Chad has rapidly worsened since the onset of the rainy season in the central African nation, aid agencies said...Other aid groups, including Action Against Hunger (ACF) and Oxfam are running water and sanitation projects in various communities."

Since gaining independence in 1960, Chad has suffered from political instability, social unrest, and conflicts with neighboring countries. This has left the country with poor infrastructure, an unstable government and a dire humanitarian situation. In addition to problems that Chadian citizens face, the country also has a great and growing number of refugees fleeing violence in neighboring countries. This influx of refugees has created an even more urgent need for humanitarian assistance. Action Against Hunger has been working to address these problems since 2006.

CHAD: Flood victims contend with thugs, cholera and hippos

"Scores of families recently displaced by flooding in the Chadian capital N’djamena face a daily struggle against local thugs, wild animals, a lack of toilets and night winds that knock down makeshift tents...Residents said they had received soap, bleach, blankets and other supplies from Red Cross, Action Against Hunger, Rotary International and other NGOs. But they said many things were lacking: Apart from better security, they needed more tents, more blankets, and containers to store drinking water."

Tackling life-threatening child malnutrition in Chad

"Chad, in west Africa, has suffered prolonged droughts, poor harvest and most recently, devastating floods. These 'weather shocks' have exacerbated an already chronic food crisis and one in every four children under five suffers from acute malnutrition in the west of the country. Through the West Africa Humanitarian Response Fund, the UK's Department for International Development is funding partners such as Action Against Hunger to help respond to these humanitarian crises."
