Malnutrition on the rise: Kanem region of Chad enters food emergency

Famine Stalks the Sahel

“Light rains, poor harvests and overpriced food will combine to create a severe famine for five Sahel countries if urgent, large-scale measures are not taken, experts warn.

“‘What is undertaken today will determine whether a new major food crisis will occur’ in the region, said Vincent Taillandier, an official of Action Against Hunger.

“‘But it’s the cumulative effect of the current situation, less than two years after the last big food crisis, which presages the worst crisis since 2005.’”

Burkina Faso is a resource-poor, landlocked country whose struggling economy is heavily dependent on rainfed agriculture to support a massively expanding population amidst successive waves of floods and droughts. Beyond being confronted with rapid urbanization, widespread inflation, cholera outbreaks, and an AIDS pandemic, the country has also been buffeted by the regional food shortages and drought experienced across the Sahel, with low rainfall devastating agricultural yields and sending staple food prices skyrocketing by between 30 -100%.
