Philippe Massoud’s education in philanthropy started early. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, to a family of hoteliers, Philippe recalls how his father set aside space in his hotel for the International Red Cross during Lebanon’s long civil war; how his grandfather gave his home and a good part of his estate for the establishment of a school; how his mother could not turn down a plea for assistance from any of Beirut’s poor.

At a time when many upscale New York eateries are struggling to pry open the wallets of an elite clientele that’s been feeling the pinch of a struggling economy, the owners of Rouge Tomate, the Michelin-starred midtown restaurant, are doing something unusual with their hard-earned revenue. They’re simply giving it away.

From December 21st through the 26th, Rouge Tomate donated 5% of its sales to Action Against Hunger. As a model for restaurants seeking to engage their patrons and give back to the community, this is an idea that could change the way we eat for the better.

Action Against Hunger’s popular Restaurants Against Hunger campaign celebrated its 8th year in 2008, partnering with food and beverage leaders to raise funds and awareness in the food-focused social environs of the Tri-State Area. Adding to the success of the event was Café Joul, a popular French bistro known for its mouth-watering foods and cozy atmosphere. Since June of last year, Café Joul has committed to donating $1.00 from sales of one of two popular items—their green salad and a chocolate mousse—to the Restaurants Against Hunger campaign.

ACF Announces 2nd Annual "Restaurants Against Hunger"

American's best restaurants are joining forces to battle hunger around the world. On October 19, restaurants from some of America's culinary capitals - New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco - will donate 20 percent of their revenue to support the 2nd annual Restaurants Against Hunger program.
