Flowing for the First Time: Water Changes Everything in Tana River, Kenya

This coming weekend is World Water Day, a tradition that was started by the United Nations in 1993 to recognize that a basic building block of healthy living—clean water—is beyond reach for millions of people worldwide.

Editor's Note: This post comes to us from Betty Cheyech, Nutrition Officer for Action Against Hunger in West Pokot, Kenya. Our thanks to Betty, and to 1,000 Days, a consortium of NGOs dedicated to maximizing a child's critical nutrition window from conception to the 2nd birthday and one of which we're proud to be a part. 1,000 Days will feature this post as part of its special March for Nutrition campaign, taking place this month.

Dangerous Rise in Severe Malnutrition Cases Cripples Central African Republic

The number of children suffering from the most severe form of malnutrition in Bangui, Central African Republic has increased dramatically due to political insecurity and economic troubles in the nation. Action Against Hunger experts warn that the number of people suffering from severe acute malnutrition may spike further as we enter the lean season, which will last until late summer.

Through Innovative Program, Women Vow to Eradicate Gender-Based Violence in Uganda

Since the early 1990s, northern Uganda has been victim to one of Africa’s longest running conflicts caused by the notorious rebel group Lord's Resistance Army, (LRA) which aims to overthrow the current government. Due to the extreme forms of violence the rebels use, especially gender-based violence (GBV), as a weapon against women and children, 1.5 million people have been displaced over the course of the last two decades.

An Everyday Emergency: Fighting Malnutrition in Rural Niger

I’m in Niger, visiting our nutrition and food security programs in Mayahi, a rural area of Maradi region, with Ousmane, our Advocacy Officer for Niger. As we drive through the hustle and bustle of Maradi, the nation’s commercial capital, it’s strange to think that this region also has some of the highest malnutrition rates in the country. After a 30-minute drive, however, the scenery changes: the paved road, shops, houses, and cars are replaced by sand, trees, and straw huts.

The Philippines, One Month After Haiyan

One month after Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines, some fourteen million people across nine provinces are still feeling the effects of the deadly storm. Action Against Hunger’s emergency response teams continue to work tirelessly to provide safe water, basic sanitation and hygiene, food and shelter to those who have lost everything. So far, we’ve reached 650,000 people in need.

Mothers on a Mission: Women's Support Groups Strengthen Communities

Action Against Hunger’s commitment to ending malnutrition goes beyond just addressing its immediate symptoms. We also tackle the underlying causes of hunger, which include problems like weak local economies and lack of access to food. Many mothers of young children in the communities we serve face these challenges, so they understand—and are in a unique position to positively change—the issues that affect their children’s nutritional health.

Kick Off the Holiday Season Right: Celebrate #GivingTuesday!

At Thanksgiving dinner, we all saved the best for last. (It was the pumpkin pie, of course). The same can be said for the series of days that follows the holiday. There’s Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. But we save the best for last: #GivingTuesday!
