Haiti: ACF Working to Prevent Malnutrition

SAINTE MARIE, PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI—As the risk of life-threatening malnutrition grows among young children in Haiti, Action Against Hunger | ACF-International has launched an emergency program to distribute high-protein BP5 biscuits to at least 15,000 vulnerable children.

Strengthening the Local Work Force

Last month Action Against Hunger | ACF International began training its national and international staff based in East and Central Africa at a brand-new center in Nairobi, Kenya. Maxine Clayton, the driving force behind the initiative, sat down with us to discuss the center and its impact on ACF’s ability to prevent and treat malnutrition in the region.

Voice from Haiti: Resilience in a Battered Nation

I’m witnessing something amazing in the Croix Deprez neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. Despite having lost everything, including loved ones, people here are pulling together for their community and their nation.

I met Serge Felix, a young 30-year-old father, today. Luckily, Serge was at the barber shop when the earthquake hit. His house was completely destroyed, and had he been at home, he may not be alive today. With his head still half shaven from that fateful day, he told me:

ACF Provides Thousands of Liters of Water in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI—In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti last week, Action Against Hunger | ACF International is rushing to provide access to clean drinking water for survivors in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.

Another plane is scheduled to depart Monday evening with an additional 87 metric tons of emergency relief supplies.

Fresh Food Vouchers: Tapping Local Markets to Fight Malnutrition

The sprawling Dadaab refugee camps of northeastern Kenya are the world’s largest. Hundreds of people arrive every day, seeking safe haven from neighboring Somalia, a country torn apart by decades of violence, as well as Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other nearby nations in conflict.

From Trickle to Torrent

Nick Radin, our Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene Advisor, recently returned from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where Action Against Hunger is bringing clean water to communities affected by ongoing conflict in the region. He reports from the village of Hombo, on the border between North and South Kivu, provinces that have borne the brunt of much of the fighting between rebel militias and government soldiers. This violence has terrorized communities and forced thousands of families from their homes.

Combating Malnutrition in Rural Communities

Esther Wamono, a Nutrition Surveillance Officer, joined Action Against Hunger in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda in November. Determined to make a difference in her native country, Esther moved from the capital of Kampala, where she earned a master’s degree in applied human nutrition, to one of the poorest and driest parts of the land-locked African nation to tackle high levels of malnutrition.

The Human Face of Climate Change

"Where is the rain?"

After inquiring about the health of family members and livestock, the Tamasheq, a nomadic tribe in Mali, greet each other by asking about the weather.

But this isn’t just idle chit-chat. For them, the rains mean everything.

What's Hygiene Got To Do With Hunger?
