Impact

Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organisation that saves the lives of malnourished children while bringing sustainable solutions to hunger and safe water to people faced with life-threatening conditions. Our life-saving programs assist some five million people in over 40 countries each year.

New Wells Bring New Trade

Wells not only bring potable water and improved hygiene and sanitation, but also the chance for more trade and a better life. One well that Action Against Hunger drilled provided just that chance for the family of Jennifer, a 10-year-old girl in the northern Ugandan village of Popong Kocona. Her family moved there from a camp for people displaced by decades of violent conflict, where she had lived since she was two years old.

“Life was hard there,” Jennifer said. “There was no food and no water. Here we can farm and we have clean water to drink.”

Food Scarce for Thousands of Nicaraguan Families

MANAGUA, NICARAGUA—Food stocks have run out for thousands of families across the Corredor Seco region of northern Nicaragua, Action Against Hunger | ACF International announced today. Because of erratic rainfall associated with the effects of El Niño, more than half of this year’s harvest was destroyed, leaving the population highly food insecure.

Outpatient Nutrition Centers: Nursing Children Back to Health in War Zone

Supporting outpatient nutrition centers is one way Action Against Hunger fights severe acute malnutrition in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a region torn apart by over a decade of brutal conflict. At the centers, local health workers trained and equipped by Action Against Hunger diagnose, treat and monitor acutely malnourished children during their weekly visits.

A Second Chance at Life

Chance Segorundo is an 11-month old boy from the village of Shasha in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He began to lose his appetite in October when his mother became ill and was no longer able to breastfeed him. This past December, after his mother died, he stopped eating altogether.

Meeting Urgent Needs of Women with Young Children in Haiti

Amidst the camps for earthquake survivors in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Action Against Hunger | ACF-International is establishing multiple centers specifically designed to provide a range of services to mothers with young children, including a safe environment for breastfeeding, as well as medical, nutritional, and psychological support. Four makeshift tents are already operational, and by the time the program is completed, some 5,000 mothers and their infants will receive this specialized assistance.

Haiti: ACF Working to Prevent Malnutrition

SAINTE MARIE, PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI—As the risk of life-threatening malnutrition grows among young children in Haiti, Action Against Hunger | ACF-International has launched an emergency program to distribute high-protein BP5 biscuits to at least 15,000 vulnerable children.

Strengthening the Local Work Force

Last month Action Against Hunger | ACF International began training its national and international staff based in East and Central Africa at a brand-new center in Nairobi, Kenya. Maxine Clayton, the driving force behind the initiative, sat down with us to discuss the center and its impact on ACF’s ability to prevent and treat malnutrition in the region.

Voice from Haiti: Resilience in a Battered Nation

I’m witnessing something amazing in the Croix Deprez neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. Despite having lost everything, including loved ones, people here are pulling together for their community and their nation.

I met Serge Felix, a young 30-year-old father, today. Luckily, Serge was at the barber shop when the earthquake hit. His house was completely destroyed, and had he been at home, he may not be alive today. With his head still half shaven from that fateful day, he told me:

ACF Provides Thousands of Liters of Water in Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI—In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti last week, Action Against Hunger | ACF International is rushing to provide access to clean drinking water for survivors in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.

Emergency Programs Launched in Haiti, Ensuring Access to Drinking Water for 35,000 People

An A340 cargo plane carrying 20 metric tons of emergency supplies and technical experts for Action Against Hunger | ACF International landed in Port-au-Prince Saturday morning, reinforcing ACF’s response to the Haitian population’s urgent need for clean water and sanitation. Another plane is scheduled to depart Monday evening with an additional 87 metric tons of emergency relief supplies.
