Our life-saving programs assist some five million people in over 40 countries each year.

"We Need Clean Water": Families Displaced from Northern Iraq at Risk

In one week, hundreds of thousands of people have fled violence in Northern Iraq and now face extremely difficult living conditions. Some have found shelter with relatives or in schools, mosques, or unfinished buildings. Others are living in temporary camps, like the one at Garmawa, where Action Against Hunger is racing to provide critical emergency services.

Responding to the Needs of Families Displaced from Northern Iraq

For nearly two weeks, Action Against Hunger's Kurdistan mission has been providing emergency assistance to some of the hundreds of thousands of displaced people who have fled the violence in Mosul and the Anbar governorate. Within 24 hours, the technical team carried out a rapid assessment of needs in both Erbil and Dohuk Governorates, and the operational staff started the first emergency response.

But cash transfers and cash-equivalent vouchers are highly effective tools for helping individuals, families, and whole communities rebound post-emergency. They empower people to make the purchasing decisions that will be most helpful to them, and they stimulate local markets by encouraging people to spend money in their own backyards.
