NEW YORK—July 3, 2014—Just three short years ago on July 9th, euphoria was felt nationwide as South Sudan declared its independence. This Independence Day stands in stark contrast, the harsh reality of conflict and suffering casting a deep shadow on the fragile nation, which is now in the midst of the worst humanitarian crisis of its nascent history.  Since conflict erupted in December 2013, 1.5 million South Sudanese have fled their homes in search of safety, nearly 400,000 of those fleeing as refugees to neighboring Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya.

As hundreds of thousands of people flee escalating violence in Iraq, Action Against Hunger urges the international community to act swiftly to mount a coordinated humanitarian response.

Hundreds of thousands of people—mainly families escaping violence in Mosul, in northern Iraq—have fled to the border of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. The United Nations has reported 100,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Governorate of Erbil, and another 200,000 people in Dohuk.

Cholera Emergency Spreads in South Sudan’s Capital

NEW YORK, May 22, 2014—After the South Sudan Ministry of Health declared a cholera outbreak in the capital city of Juba on May 9th, the number of cases grew rapidly. A total of 266 cases have been reported thus far, resulting in 13 deaths—six at health facilities, and seven among community members who had not yet accessed treatment.
