Emergency Water Distributions Reach Families in Gaza

After 19 days of attacks and military intervention, the water and sanitation systems in the Gaza Strip are on the verge of total collapse. Despite difficulties of access, the global humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger / Action Contre la Faim (ACF) has begun trucking emergency supplies of clean water to some 48,000 people in Gaza.

Over the last 12 days, Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants—1 million of whom are women and children—have been subjected to constant aerial, sea, and land-based bombardments without any way to escape the violence. Madrid, Spain—Pasha Pakeliana, 63, lives in Georgia’s Kodori Valley in Abkhazia and is no stranger to hardship. Like her fellow Georgians, this is not the first time she and her family have had to flee their homes as a result of conflict. "We live in Abkhazia but I know that if I return, I’ll never be able to leave again," states Pasha who now sleeps on a mattress on the floor, in very poor hygienic conditions, in one of the shelters of Kutaisi, west of Georgia.

With an estimated 20,000 people still displaced in the aftermath of the recent Georgian conflict, the humanitarian aid organization Action Against Hunger | ACF International has initiated an emergency intervention in Tbilisi. In addition to poor hygienic conditions in shelters, food is scarce and expensive. "In Tbilisi, the price of staple foods such as flour and sugar continues to rise," says Vincent Stehli, desk officer for Action Against Hunger in Caucasus.

Emergency Teams Assist Displaced Georgians

The humanitarian agency Action Against Hunger (ACF-USA), which has been present in Georgia since 1995, will provide assistance to displaced people in Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest city, where more than 13,000 have been temporarily accommodated.
