In an effort to enhance its emergency response across the Horn of Africa, which is facing its worst humanitarian crisis in decades, Action Against Hunger continues to ship water and sanitation equipment and critical food supplies to the region to reinforce its ongoing efforts.

Heavy monsoon rains have inundated southern Pakistan, displacing some 200,000 people and leaving an estimated five million people in need of humanitarian assistance across the Balochistan and Sindh Provinces. In response to the Government of Pakistan’s call for international support, Action Against Hunger has launched rapid needs assessments in the Sindh Province to determine emergency needs among the affected communities, many of which have yet to fully recover from the historic floods of 2010.

Across Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Djibouti, we’re helping thousands of children in the hardest-hit regions—from the 3,000 malnourished children we’re treating in Somalia, to our efforts in Garbatulla, Kenya, where one in five children is now malnourished. We’re racing to reduce the impact of water shortages by constructing wells, drilling boreholes, and installing storage devices to capture future rainfall, in addition to promoting hygiene to prevent the spread of diarrhea, cholera, and other water-borne diseases.

Given the immense scale of the humanitarian disaster affecting the Greater Horn of Africa—some 12 million people across four countries—we fear this devastating food crisis will continue well into next year. Even as we struggle to reach everyone in need of help, it’s clear that hundreds of thousands of families will remain in urgent need of food and assistance in the coming months, even if the rains arrive later this year.

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA—With life-threatening conditions reaching catastrophic levels in parts of Eastern Africa, the United Nations took the extraordinary step of declaring famine in parts of Somalia, a classification defined by mortality rates greater than two people per 10,000 per day across a specific region, along with skyrocketing rates of deadly malnutrition (above 30% for children under five), among other indicators.

NAIROBI, KENYA — As a severe food crisis sweeps across the Greater Horn of Africa, an estimated 10 million people are faced with food shortages, mass livestock losses, and protracted drought-like conditions. In Kenya alone, some 3.5 million people have been declared food insecure, with significant numbers facing catastrophic conditions after consecutive years of below-average rainfall that have resulted in one of the driest years since 1950.

ABYEI, SOUTHERN SUDAN—Tensions have risen steadily in Sudan as the date for southern independence draws near, but recent developments suggest a new level of insecurity along disputed sections of the border , displacing tens of thousands in the region and threatening to set off a broader humanitarian crisis. While the situation remains fluid, an estimated 110,000 people have already fled their homes in and around Abyei, relocating in neighboring Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Unity, and Warrap State.

DUÉKOUÉ, IVORY COAST—While the Ivory Coast’s recent political crisis has subsided, the resulting humanitarian emergency persists. Tens of thousands of Ivoirians remain displaced, taking refuge in makeshift camps in the western part of the country, while thousands of others remain vulnerable to recent economic and agricultural disruptions.
