Race Against Hunger

The Race Against Hunger is a unique service learning campaign that unites students around the world in the fight against global hunger and malnutrition. Tapping into the vast potential of youth to become powerful agents of change, this growing initiative helps students gain a more meaningful perspective on a critical problem, understand their interconnectedness to the world, and ultimately act on their newfound knowledge through a fun-run.

How Does The Race Work?

The Race educates students about the causes and treatment of acute malnutrition, with the ultimate goal to galvanize the support needed to eliminate deadly hunger as a leading cause of early childhood mortality. To achieve this objective, the Race kicks off with an educational assembly held at a participating school that is led by an Action Against Hunger student outreach coordinator. The assembly introduces students to the organization, its activities in many at-need countries, and the Race Against Hunger as an international youth movement.

The Race then features a classroom curriculum about deadly malnutrition that, over the course of the spring semester, can be easily integrated by teachers into core subjects, including English, Social Studies, Reading, Math, Health, and Science. Culminating in a fun, non-competitive sporting event filled with physical activities, the Race empowers students to act on the lessons they’ve learned about global hunger in the classroom and recognize that they can help change the world.

What Do Students Gain From The Race?

The Race curriculum challenges students to deepen their understanding of world geography, culture, current events, and nutrition. Through involvement with this initiative, students become aware of critical life-and-death issues occurring outside their communities and integrate new or revised perspectives into their ways of thinking and acting. Instead of provoking “compassion fatigue,” which often results from dwelling on images of poverty and disease, the Race Against Hunger helps school children develop a meaningful understanding of what communities in such distant countries as Somalia, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo contend with each day.

The Race Against Hunger also provides an invaluable space for students to develop a wide range of skills, including critical thinking, writing, and public speaking skills, all of which are difficult to learn through test taking and exams alone. By educating peers, parents, and community members about global malnutrition, students grasp life-changing lessons about social and ethical responsibility, empathy, and cultural diversity.

In short, the Race’s multi-disciplinary approach empowers students to act on the lessons they’ve learned about global hunger in the classroom and helps them recognize that they can help change the world.
