Post-Harvest Losses and Strategies for Reduction

January, 2014

Post-Harvest Losses (PHL) management is recognized as an important component of global efforts to optimizing agriculture’s full potential for ensuring food and nutrition security. PHL reduction can greatly contribute to ACF efforts in combating hunger and improving food security and livelihoods for vulnerable populations. The objective of this technical paper is to provide background information on Post-Harvest Losses by highlighting some concepts and problems of postharvest food losses in cereals and perishable crops as well as critical factors governing PHL and food waste. It synthesizes key literature on PHL and strategies to reduce them.
