MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES—The international humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger | ACF International is rushing to provide immediate assistance to the victims of Typhoon Ketsana, which hit the Philippines on Saturday. Severe flooding caused by the typhoon has forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and into temporary relief centers in the capital city of Manila and surrounding provinces. The country’s authorities have appealed for international assistance to respond to the growing needs of the population.

Action Against Hunger has mobilized emergency resources for the immediate distribution of food, drinking water, hygiene kits and portable latrines, as well as blankets, mattresses, sheets and cooking utensils to those displaced by the floods.

“Nearly 2 million people have been affected,” said Patrice Chataigner, Head of Emergencies for Action Against Hunger. “People seeking refuge in temporary shelter sites desperately lack food and clean water and face unsanitary conditions far below international minimum standards. Many others are still awaiting assistance, clinging to each other on roofs.”

Weather forecasters have predicted that another typhoon may hit the area in the coming days, which threatens to worsen the conditions of those already affected by the floods. Action Against Hunger has worked in the Philippines since 2000, implementing programs in nutrition, food security, and water and sanitation in Manila and the regions of Minanao, Caraga, and Bicol.
