Action Against Hunger Honored with Tufts University "Global Citizenship Award"

ACF's Pioneering Work Recognized with Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award Boston, MA — On February 22, 2008, Nan Dale, Executive Director of Action Against Hunger – USA, accepted the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award at the 23rd EPIIC Symposium on Global Poverty and Inequality.

On behalf of the Institute for Global Leadership, Helaina Stein, member of this year’s EPIIC colloquium, presented Action Against Hunger with the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award in Boston on February 15.

EPIIC (Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship) established the Dr. Jean Mayer Global Citizenship Award in 1993 to honor the work and life of Dr. Jean Mayer—president and chancellor of Tufts University from 1976 to 1993, and a great friend of EPIIC. A world renowned nutritionist, Dr. Mayer advised three U.S. Presidents, the U.S. Congress, and the World Health Organization, among other notable individuals and institutions. As the 10th president of Tufts University, Dr. Mayer created the nation’s first graduate school of nutrition, established New England’s only veterinary school, the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, and co-founded both the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the Center for Environmental Management. Quoting President Jimmy Carter, “Dr. Mayer’s life and productive career have been dedicated to the service of mankind.”

In recognizing those who fulfill the essential service of bettering humanity, the Institute for Global Leadership commends Action Against Hunger for its admirable and pioneering work throughout the world.

Action Against Hunger / Action Contre la Faim (ACF) was founded in France in 1979 among the so-called “second generation” humanitarian organizations— those agencies whose identities were forged in response to the perceived limits of traditional humanitarianism. Seeking a less deferential role for humanitarian actors, these organizations sought a brand of humanitarian politics that could influence political actors and outcomes, not just mitigate atrocities on the ground. The resulting organizational shift revolutionized how humanitarian professionals responded to international crises and interacted with key actors, institutions, and agencies.

Recognized as a world leader in the fight against hunger, the ACF International Network has pursued its vision of a world without hunger for nearly three decades, combating hunger in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity. Its 6,000+ field staff—seasoned professionals and technical experts in the fields of water and sanitation, food security, public health, and nutrition—work in over 40 countries to restore dignity, self-sufficiency, and independence to vulnerable populations around the world.

EPIIC recognizes Action Against Hunger’s inspiring work, which embodies Dr. Mayer’s goals of bettering health and nutrition throughout the world.
