Jean-Christophe Rufin, President of ACF-France, Visits Post-Tsunami South Asia

Action Against Hunger emergency response and recovery programs in Indonesia Paris, FranceJean-Christophe Rufin, President of Action Against Hunger France, is bringing his support to the teams and to the victims of the disaster. He left Wednesday and is currently at the Action Against Hunger base in Batticaloa, on the East coast of Sri Lanka - one of the areas most affected by the tsunami. He will return to France on Sunday.

Separately, a cargo plane chartered by Action Against Hunger will take off tonight at 10pm from Vatry (Marne) for Sri Lanka, with volunteers and 40 tons of equipment on board.

The total cost of this plane is EUR 550,000 (EUR 250,000 for the plane charter and EUR 300,000 for the cargo). Individual donors have in part made this operation possible.

Action Against Hunger volunteers are transporting the following items:

  • Logistical equipment: 2 vehicles, to allow Action Against Hunger teams rapid access to the victims, tents, and gasoline.
  • Food: 30 tons of food rations
  • Hydraulic equipment: 14 cisterns, water purification kits, chlorine, filters, and pumps.
  • Health: rehydration salts

In addition, another cargo aircraft will leave on Sunday at 1:30 pm for Bandah Aceh, carrying 40 tons of equipment. This plane was chartered thanks to the donations of Magasins U, TF1 and RTL. This equipment will allow the implementation of water purification and food security programs. The Action Against Hunger teams, ready to address the emergency and the needs of the populations, are mobilized locally to receive and coordinate humanitarian assistance.
