"Some of the city's most renowned chefs gathered yesterday to raise money for Action Against Hunger and to celebrate the launch of the new book “Street Eats” by acclaimed photographer Battman (Alan Batt). During the first part of the event, VIP guests mingled with such culinary stars as Bill Telepan, Marc Murphy and David Burke as they signed copies of the hot-off-the-press Street Eats.
Then the real fun started with two hours of tastings from over 20 of the finest restaurants in New York creating their take on favorite street foods from around the world including Osteria Morini, Telepan and SD26. Along with the tasty treats, attendees could choose from a nice selection of beers such as Peak Summer Session Ale and Captain Lawrence Kölsch to pair with the food and keep their thirsts quenched as they roamed the beautiful ballroom.
After diving into a few of the tables to check out the offerings, we quickly realized this wasn’t going to be the New York street food of limp hot dogs and messy chicken over rice that we’re used to. These were gourmet small bites that New Yorkers could only dream about stumbling upon on a random street corner when the hunger pangs set in. Sorry pretzel guy, but it’s pretty hard to win the battle when you’re up against perfectly fried frog legs hot out of the pan or juicy meatballs stuffed with pork, mortadella AND prosciutto. Just sayin'.
