Race Against Hunger FAQ

Why "Race" Against Hunger?
The Race is not a competitive event. Rather, the primary aim of the Race Against Hunger is for students to engage in a fun and healthy activity that teaches them about global hunger while raising essential funds for Action Against Hunger’s life-saving programs around the world.

How far do we run?
Each school will set the distance of the laps students will run. Some schools have tracks with a set distance for each lap, while other schools will measure laps by ¼ miles or ½ kilometers in their playing fields or local parks. Students can run as many laps as they desire in the time frame set for the event.

When is the Race Against Hunger?
As a nationwide campaign, the Race Against Hunger will take place in the second half of the school year, with the educational and awareness-raising components occurring from March-April and the fun-run taking place in late spring.

Where will the Race fun-run be held?
Some schools have their own tracks or playing fields that are conducive to holding the fun-run. If your school does not have access to a track or field, the Race can be held at a local park. Neighboring schools can collaborate and hold a multi-school Race at a community park.

How do we find sponsors for the Race, and how much should we raise?
After students learn about global hunger in the classroom, each participant will be given a sponsorship booklet which they will use to seek sponsors for the fun-run. The goal is for students to spread awareness about global hunger in their communities and among their families and friends so that more people will have an understanding of why hunger exists in the world and how Action Against Hunger combats it. Students will also ask friends and family to become part of the solution by sponsoring them for each lap they run during the Race. A small pledge goes a long way, and every contribution makes a difference. Pledges typically range from $1-5 per lap run, with students running between 5-20 laps each. The funds raised by students in the Race Against Hunger directly help Action Against Hunger save the lives of hungry and malnourished people around the world.

How does the money raised by students help?
A small amount of money can really make a big difference in the lives of those suffering from hunger and malnutrition. For example:

  • $5 – supplies a lemon, banana, mango, or orange tree to a farming family incorporating fresh fruit into their diets, preventing soil erosion and desertification, and providing shade.
  • $25 – allows a farmer to buy enough maize, groundnut, or millet seeds to plant his plot for one agricultural season and provides training on how to maintain crops for a healthy harvest.
  • $35 – supports 30 days of treatment for a severely malnourished child in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • $50 – helps a displaced family in Darfur, Sudan with needed emergency materials such as blankets, cooking pots, a tent shelter, etc.

What happens once our school has decided to take part in the Race Against Hunger?
Once your school enrolls in the Race Against Hunger, Action Against Hunger will liaise with the designated Race coordinator at your school to help tailor the Race Against Hunger campaign to your school’s needs. We will also send each Race coordinator an information pack including a DVD about Action Against Hunger and the work we do.
