Job Objectives:
Established in the USA in 1985, Action Against Hunger-USA re-opened its New York office in 1997 and currently has responsibility for seven missions in six countries: Democratic Republic of Congo East and West, Kenya, Pakistan, South Sudan, Tajikistan and Uganda. Action Against Hunger USA manages nearly $30 million in programs, has twenty-five permanent staff based in NYC, over 70 international employees and 1,200 national employees in the missions.
Main Objective
The Food Security Officer works with the local population to ensure food security for the area. The responsibilities of the job vary among placement as well as over time. Projects may include helping to rebuild a food producing factory after a conflict or helping to set up a local market. The ideal candidate is able to analyze the situation and help develop long term solutions all in accordance with the ACF Charter.
Responsibilities
ManagementManaging and training national staff.
Training local groups.
Following up and monitoring of food security project.
Training in PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) and RRA (Rapid Rural Appraisal).
Representation Liaising with local authorities, research institutes, partner organizations, NGOs, governmnet bodies and United Nations missions.
Program Identifying needs of vulnerable groups.
Planning and implementing various programs- including food distribution, surveillance systems, small scale businesses.
Capacity building of the local structure.
Regeneration of small scale industry.
Revitalizing local economy through diversification of seeds.
Research and analysis- analyzing local environment and research cultural characteristics, traditional foods, food habits, taboos, coping mechanisms, land distribution and resources management.
Rehabilitation of irrigation systems.
Co-ordinating with other departments (nutrition, water & sanitation, health).

Qualifications:
Essential
Degree in agriculture, agronomy, animal production, irrigation or related subject.
Experience in social sciences (economics, sociology, geography, anthropology, environmental studies).
Ability to work within a team setting.
Ability to deal with stressful situations.
Recommended Further qualification in tropical agriculture or related subject preferred.
Second language skills highly recommended.
Experience Two years relevant work experience essential.
Some previous overseas experience essential.
Database analysis and GIS (geographic information system).
