Maureen Gallagher brings more than a decade of project management experience in international relief and development to her current role as Senior Nutrition Advisor for Action Against Hunger. Her expertise spans grassroots development, disaster relief operations, participatory assessments, program design and proposal writing, and the implementation and evaluation of projects. Ms. Gallagher’s work has covered a variety of program sectors, including public health, nutrition, agriculture and natural resource management.
Ms. Gallagher’s interest in international development began in 1999 during an internship with the UK-based organization War on Want, where she helped secure funding for development projects in Brazil. After finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a concentration in international development at Boston University in 1999, Ms. Gallagher joined the Red Cross Disaster Services team in San Francisco. In 2000, she spent two years in the Peace Corps working in food security, health and nutrition among rural communities in Niger, and another year as a part of the Peace Corps’ first health and nutrition team in East Timor.
Ms. Gallagher joined Action Against Hunger in 2004, after obtaining a Master’s of Science in Social Policy and Planning in Developing Countries from the London School of Economics. During her time at Action Against Hunger, she has held several positions related to nutrition, emergency response, and technical support for programs in countries including Uganda, Chad, D.R. Congo, Myanmar, Sudan and Nigeria. In the program area of nutrition, Ms. Gallagher has helped facilitate the transition of children’s nutritional treatment from inpatient to outpatient. She has further developed models to progress programs from NGO-implemented to health system integrated initiatives for Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM), and has strengthened community mobilization to improve children’s access to nutritional treatment. She has also led various assessments in the field, including nutritional anthropometric surveys and coverage investigations.
As Technical Coordinator in Nigeria, she oversaw and supported teams conducting programs in nutrition, food security and livelihoods, and water, sanitation and hygiene. She collaborated with Save the Children and UNICEF in establishing the Working for Nutrition in Northern Nigeria program, and helped secure funding for future development programs in the region. Ms. Gallagher brings this range of experience to her present position as Senior Nutrition Advisor, where she manages and supports nutrition programs in countries in Africa and Asia as well as collaborates with other ACF headquarters on technical initiatives. Ms. Gallagher leads the nutrition team at our New York Headquarters, defining and implementing innovative, effective strategies for our nutrition programs worldwide.
