Action Against Hunger’s Director of Operations, Andrea Tamburini, has served on the front lines of global humanitarian efforts for a range of UN agencies and NGOs since 2000.
Mr. Tamburini joined Action Against Hunger in 2010 after consulting with the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and their Policy Development and Studies Branch, making recommendations on humanitarian guidelines before the General Assembly, the Security Council, ECOSOC and the Governing Bodies of UN Agencies, Funds and Programs. In addition to consulting with the UN, Mr. Tamburini also served as a visiting professor with Fordham University’s International Institute of Humanitarian Affairs, instructing graduate students in International Emergency Relief courses, covering international humanitarian law, conflict resolution and project cycle management.
Mr. Tamburini began his career in the humanitarian sector in Kosovo at the close of the conflict in the Balkans, working with the Italian organization CESVI (Cooperazione e Sviluppo) where he coordinated the agency’s disaster response, managed donor funding, and provided security oversight for programs supporting refugee and displaced populations. After Kosovo, Mr. Tamburini continued working with CESVI, first in Gujarat, India, where he managed the organization’s response to the 2001 earthquake, and later in the Middle East, managing psychosocial youth projects in the Occupied Palestinian Territories that provided 30,000 Palestinian children with nutrition and sports, education and cultural activities. Andrea was then promoted to the position of Middle East Coordinator and oversaw CESVI’s programs across the region, including the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Iraq, Jordan and Kuwait. As CESVI’s Middle East Coordinator, Mr. Tamburini managed a team of more than 60 people implementing programs in education, water and sanitation, job creation, income generation and general support for displaced populations. Post-CESVI, Mr. Tamburini has held a range of positions with a number of humanitarian agencies in Darfur, Sudan, Vietnam, and Lebanon.
A native of Italy, Mr. Tamburini received his International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA) from New York’s Fordham University in 2003. He earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Università degli Studi di Milano.
