Action Against Hunger celebrated its continued partnership with leaders of the food and beverage industry on June 15th at New York City’s Touch nightclub. Restaurants Against Hunger, an annual benefit to support Action Against Hunger’s life-saving programs in more than 40 countries around the world and raise awareness of the crisis of acute malnutrition, drew some 350 attendees—nearly double last year’s number.
The evening featured a range of festivities, from a silent auction, to tastings from the French Culinary Institute, to live music and dancing with indie-rocker Clara Lofaro and her band. Singer-songwriter Jeffrey Gaines made a cameo appearance, joining Lofaro onstage for several songs.
Celebrity chefs were also on hand, including the legendary Jacques Pepin, whose brief remarks about Action Against Hunger’s critical work saving the lives of children threatened by acute malnutrition, drew rave reviews.
Guests chatted and danced the evening away, all the while eagerly bidding on more than 80 silent auction items, ranging from meals at Alain Ducasse’ Adour and Chanterelle, to a private wine tasting class, to theater tickets and sunset cruises for the entire family. Four tickets to a master class with Jacques Pepin at the French Culinary Institute followed by a drink with the chef went for $1,000—the highest bid of the night.
"The most basic and primordial right of a human being, especially a child, is the right to access food and water," Pepin said. "I am honored to support Action Against Hunger for its essential work and commitment to children."
