Emergency in the Horn of Africa
Across Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Djibouti, we’re helping thousands of children in the hardest-hit regions—from the 3,000 malnourished children we’re treating in Somalia, to our efforts in Garbatulla, Kenya, where one in five children is now malnourished. We’re racing to reduce the impact of water shortages by constructing wells, drilling boreholes, and installing storage devices to capture future rainfall, in addition to promoting hygiene to prevent the spread of diarrhea, cholera, and other water-borne diseases.

Impact
Somalia
- Some 7,000 children were successfully treated for malnutrition between March and July.
- In August, 215 tons of food assistance—cereals, pulses, oil and salt—were distributed to 12,500 individuals.
Kenya
- We’ve provided lifesaving therapeutic treatment for over 10,500 children in Kenya between March and July.
- Our food security programs—purchasing drought-threatened livestock—have provided income for some 30,000 agro-pastoralists and much needed protein for 2,200 vulnerable households.
Ethiopia
- Our specialists have provided 119 nutritional training sessions to 1,582 participants to support the work of the Ministry of Health in several southern regions of the country.
- We’ve distributed 37,600 water purification kits to help more than 22,000 people purify their drinking water to prevent the occurrence of waterborne diseases.
Djibouti
- Six therapeutic nutrition centers have been set up for the treatment of severely malnourished children, with an influx of over 600 children in just 10 days.
- Our teams are also supporting Djibouti’s Ministry of Health in more than 40 health centers by training government health workers to diagnose and treat acute malnutrition.
