With over 30 years of expertise in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity, Action Against Hunger runs life-saving programs in some 40 countries benefiting 5 million people each year.
India
Despite its status as an economic powerhouse, India alone accounts for 54% of all malnutrition-related child deaths. The sheer scale and scope of India’s malnutrition problem positions the subcontinent as ground zero in the fight to end child deaths from acute malnutrition. At work in India since 2011, ACF is currently scaling up its lifesaving nutrition programs while helping the government build capacity and strengthen its health systems to tackle this deadly condition.
Indonesia
Action Against Hunger mounted an emergency response in the fall of 2010 after the eruption of Mount Merapi forced over 340,000 Indonesians to flee, most to camps and makeshift settlements. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, ACF drew from its pre-positioned stock of emergency supplies to provide access to lifesaving sanitation services in displacement camps, supported 35 outpatient health centers to head off the risk of deadly malnutrition among displaced children, and rehabilitated water systems damaged by the eruption.
Pakistan
Pakistan experienced colossal flooding in 2010 when monsoon rains swept away homes, bridges and roads, leaving 20 million people displaced or affected. Faced with contaminated floodwaters and destroyed infrastructure, ACF rushed to control the spread of water-borne illnesses by providing 290,000 people with access to clean water and improved hygiene. Despite renewed flooding in 2011, ACF continues to help the most vulnerable secure access to food, income, and clean water.
