Kenya has one of the largest economies in East and Central Africa, and a strong agricultural sector. However, the unequal distribution of wealth has left half of the country’s population living below the poverty line. Struggling Kenyans face daunting health challenges such as malnutrition, malaria, and waterborne diseases—all preventable illnesses that the nation’s public health system is ill-equipped to handle. To assist these vulnerable populations, Action Against Hunger has been implementing programs in nutrition, food security, and water, sanitation, and hygiene in Kenya since 2002.
In 2014, Action Against Hunger's team in Kenya strengthened its approach to addressing health problems in the country, integrating nutrition, water, and food security and livelihoods programs in its areas of operation. Capacity building efforts were enhanced, supporting the work of Kenya's Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water, and that of our implementing partners.
Action Against Hunger has kick-started a country strategy for 2015-2017 in Kenya, which addresses two main pillars: ending drought emergency and addressing all forms of undernutrition.
We finalized two pilot initiatives aimed at sustainably influencing nutrition practices and building a model on local undernutrition causality. As the Chair of the Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance, Action Against Hunger Kenya coordinated advocacy activities at national and county levels. The team was also busy completing two key case studies, on nutrition causal analysis and water, sanitation, and hygiene governance, last year. We also hosted nutrition, logistics, and human resources-focused workshops.
We're proud to have helped over 300,000 Kenyans receive nutritional support and access safe water and sanitation in 2014. And we will continue to help Kenya fight deadly hunger through our integrated nutrition, food security, and water programs.
