Just Passing Through: Student Rollerblades Cross-Country for Global Hunger

Jack Sisson embarked on a cross-country excursion on June 10th, armed with nothing but the backpack on his back and the rollerblades on his feet. Inline skating from Yorktown, Virginia to San Francisco, California, Sisson is taking this three month sojourn from the day-to-day life of a Dartmouth junior to benefit the international humanitarian group Action Against Hunger /Action Contre la Faim (ACF).

After two years of planning with little more in mind than a cross-country adventure, Mr. Sisson decided to take his coast-to-coast excursion one step farther. He researched reputable organizations on The American Institute of Philanthropy and Charity Navigator websites and decided to support Action Against Hunger because of its mandate and high ratings.

Sisson aims to use his 3,800 mile trek to raise awareness on global hunger and “get resources and funding for the people in the world who I think need it most, those who lack food and clean water to drink.” According to his latest blog update, he has traversed 1,900 miles and raised $3,000 for the organization.

Action Against Hunger, an international humanitarian organization, works to save the lives of malnourished children while providing families with sustainable access to safe water and long-term solutions to hunger. With programs in over 40 countries, Action Against Hunger reaches 5 million people a year, restoring dignity, self-sufficiency, and independence to vulnerable populations around the world.

Rollerblading Near You: Jack Skates through Santa Fe

Rollerblading 3,800 miles across the U.S. is physically and logistically challenging: Jack has to mail himself spare parts and new wheels as they are too heavy to carry while skating; he finds accommodation by camping out at churches and in private homes when possible; and he must rely on maps created by the Adventure Cycling Association as cross-country resources for rollerbladers do not exist.

A tentative itinerary is as follows: Early August: Farmington, New Mexico Early to mid-August: Cedar City, Utah Late August: Carson City, Nevada Early September: San Francisco, California

Jack aims to complete his trip by the beginning of September, but he is currently passing through New Mexico and is available for interviews by phone or in person.
