Here at ACF, we get questions all the time from students like you. They are students who want to help fight hunger but do not know where to start or how to get involved. After learning about the recent crisis in the Horn of Africa, more and more students are emailing us with questions about our work to end global hunger and malnutrition. Details of the crisis in the Horn of Africa are striking: an estimated 11.5 million are impacted by food shortages, huge losses of livestock, and drought-like conditions.

While we are grateful for your emails, we want to challenge you to become involved in action. Time and time again, these emails include, “but I’m just a student”. I want to let you know that you are not just a student. You are an important person in the fight against hunger!

Last year, over 17,000 students at 70 schools across the country walked, ran, jogged, danced, rollerbladed, and skipped to raise money with our Race Against Hunger campaign. Through fun runs, bake sales, dance competitions, talent shows, and penny drives, these schools joined in the fight against hunger. These donations helped lot of families and no donation goes unnoticed:

  • $5: Purchases a lemon, banana, mango, or orange tree for a farming family, this helps them to eat fresh fruit daily, prevents soil erosion and desertification, and gives them shade.
  • $25: Helps a farmer to buy enough maize, groundnut, or millet seeds for one agricultural season and provides training on how to maintain crops for a healthy harvest.
  • $35: Provides a 30 day crucial treatment for a severely malnourished child in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
  • $50: Aids a family in times of emergency with necessities like blankets, cooking pots, and soap.

These donations demonstrate that any amount, large or small, greatly helps the families that Action Against Hunger supports. Remember, you are not just a student; you are someone who can play a role in ending global hunger!
