Second annual Lose for Good campaign raises $300,000 for Action Against Hunger

Action Against Hunger and Weight Watchers address two very different epidemics: hunger and obesity.

But beneath their different aims and approaches, they share a common purpose: to improve the lives of people around the world through proper nutrition and healthier living. That’s why Action Against Hunger joined forces with Weight Watchers and Share Our Strength, an organization dedicated to hunger relief in the United States, for the Lose for Good campaign.

Through Lose for Good, Weight Watchers asks its members to lose weight not just for themselves, but for the benefit of malnourished people the world over.

“Lose For Good is designed to further inspire Weight Watchers members as they take the first step on a journey towards improving their well-being,” said David Kirchhoff, President and CEO of Weight Watchers International, Inc. “In doing so, they will help others by converting their weight loss into another person’s gain.”

Here’s how it works. Weight Watchers commits to donating $250,000 for every million pounds lost during the campaign, up to a maximum of one million dollars. The 2009 campaign raised one million dollars (that’s four million pounds shed!), and another $23,500 through “Lose-A-Palooza,” a one-day social networking event that had the online community abuzz. Action Against Hunger netted over $300,000 for its life-saving programs, surpassing the amount raised in 2008 during the campaign’s inaugural year.

“Our partnership with Weight Watchers has been instrumental in raising awareness about how devastating acute malnutrition is and essential funding for our life-saving programs,” said Nan Dale, Executive Director of Action Against Hunger. “And, it’s gratifying that our joint efforts have helped inspire healthier lifestyles across this country.”
