Couple Plan 1,500 Mile Trek from Italy to Spain to Fight Global Hunger

Adventurous couple partners with ACF to raise funds and awareness for anti-hunger programs

In May of next year, Scott Zielke of Chicago, IL and Ashley Green, a native of Knoxville, TN, will begin a journey through three European countries in an effort to generate awareness and funds for Action Against Hunger/ Action Contre la Faim (ACF). This dedicated couple will set off from Rome, traversing the Via Francigena and then the Camino De Santiago toward Santiago de Compostela, Spain covering over 1,500 miles along the way.

The route, commonly called The Road to Santiago, is an ancient path first used by medieval pilgrims and still marked by painted arrows and plaques for the convenience of modern travelers. By utilizing this symbolic ‘road of miracles,’ the couple intends to pay homage to the common people.

In the months until the start of their travels, Zielke and Green aim to spread the word and gather donations stateside for ACF, an international humanitarian aid organization. The pair is dedicating a year to promoting and furthering Action Against Hunger’s life-saving programs in malnutrition and water and sanitation.

When asked how they came to choose this particular organization, Scott replied: “After reading through many reviews, scouting through many websites, and truly getting a feel for each organization’s beliefs, I came to the conclusion that ACF was head over heels the best choice. I feel that ACF has a phenomenal track record of putting the money where it is needed and doing the research to find where that is. What I like most about ACF, though, is their commitment to ending hunger now and in the future by developing strategies, conducting research, and ultimately building life saving programs that bring about change.”

The couple is in step with a growing number of Athletes Against Hunger, an informal assemblage of individuals taking part in everything from inline skating across the US to climbing Mount Everest to raise funds and publicity for the cause.
