Clean Water Access Initiative Sponsors Philippines Project

We’re teaming up with longtime partner Tyco on an emergency relief project to provide clean water to residents of the Philippine island of Mindanao in the aftermath of a damaging tropical storm.

Known locally as Sendong, December’s Tropical Storm Washi triggered flooding and landslides that killed more than 1,200 people and forced 40,000 others to seek shelter in evacuation centers. Action Against Hunger, which operates a range of programs on the island of Mindanao, will use a $50,000 Tyco emergency response grant to repair and construct water systems and provide essential sanitation services in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. These efforts will provide up to 15,000 people with access to safe drinking water and help prevent the spread of water-borne illnesses.

This is the third project supported by the Clean Water Access initiative, a partnership launched by Tyco and Action Against Hunger last year to bring clean water to communities threatened by malnutrition and water-borne diseases. One of the initiative's explicit goals is to work quickly and effectively to address humanitarian needs resulting from natural disasters; to date, the Clean Water Access Initiative has supported emergency relief projects in Kenya and Pakistan, as well as efforts in the Philippines.

In addition to emergency relief, the Initiative supports capacity-building projects worldwide. The first Clean Water Access Initiative capacity-building project is under way on the Indonesian island of Timor. Through this project, 40,000 people will benefit from improved access to safe water.
